Ryan Winter Scores Second Straight Northwest Dwarf Car Speedweek Win At Banks
By Ben Deatherage
Banks, Oregon- It would be a wild, crazy, and action-packed fourth round of the second annual Northwest Dwarf Car Speedweek. The bout was contested on Thursday, August 15th at Sunset Speedway Park. A total of thirty-four entries made the journey to the “Banks Bullring” representing several western states and the Canadian province of British Columbia.
Come feature event time a big multi-car pileup occurred on the opening start. When the carnage was cleaned up, Darren Brown seized the initiative on the ensuing restart. The El Cajon, California chauffeur, held down the top spot until lap three. Grabbing possession of the coveted position was Galt, California’s Ryan Winter. The two drivers duked it out for several circuits until Winter managed to secure the lead.
Winter was not out of the woods just quite yet. He had his hands full with Danny Wagner, of Bay Point, California, and San Jose, California’s Shawn Jones. But every time a challenge arose, Ryan managed to keep them all at bay. Ryan Winter held off the competition to score his second straight Northwest Dwarf Car Speedweek triumph.
Shawn Jones put together a respectable second-place performance over third finishing Jake Van Ortwick, of nearby Scappoose. Collecting fourth would be Danny Wagner while Garden Grove, California traveler Jessica Swanson came across the stripe in fifth.
Qualifying got divided into five groups. Darren Brown, Ryan Winter, Shawn Jones, Jessica Swanson, and Danny Wagner were the fastest cars in each group. Heat race winners were Fairfield, California veteran Mike Grenert, Winter, Jones, neighboring Hillsboro driver John Chrisman, and Wagner. Scoring victories in the two consolation features were Brian Lee, of Campbell River, British Columbia, and Stockton, California pilot Jonathon Henry.
The Northwest Dwarf Car “Week of Speed” will conclude this weekend at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Washington. The 3/8-mile facility will be in action on Friday, August 16th, and Saturday, the 17th. Both nights the Front Gates open at 5:30 PM with racing beginning at 7:00. For ticket information, be sure and log on to www.graysharborraceway.com. If you can't make it live in person you can watch lap-to-lap coverage on Dirt Oval TV.
