Banks, Oregon- At Southern Oregon Speedway on July 17th, 2000 California young gun Steven Tiner made his main event debut with the Champion Racing Oil Speedweek Northwest Series, presented by BC Motorsports and Highline Performance. He would finish second that night to Brent Kaeding and would go on to become the driver with the second most feature Speedweek starts but without a single victory.
That would all change on Thursday, July 12th at Sunset Speedway Park for the third round of the 2018 Champion Racing Oil Speedweek Northwest schedule. Twenty-cars would fill the pit area representing the states of Oregon, Washington, California, Arizona, and Texas as well as the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta.
It would take three attempts to get the first lap completed, as the first two would have incidents in both. Visalia, California’s Steven Tiner would seize the early race lead and looked very fast in the middle-high-side portion of the track. There were two additional caution flags but each restart Tiner managed to retain the top spot. Steven Tiner would become the third different winner of the week and the thirty-seventh different Speedweek Northwest winner since 1998. It is also the third straight night that there has been a first time Speedweek victor.
Jason Solwold, in the Monica Baca and Mike Anderson owned entry from Burlington, Washington, was second followed by Clarksburg, California’s Justyn Cox, in third. D.J. Netto, of Hanford, California, was fourth over fifth finishing Tracy, California teenager Kyle Offill.
Penngrove, California teenager Michael Kofoid, in the Doug and Kathy Rutz owned entry from British Columbia, was fast time of the night and set a new track record of 12.424 seconds. Heat races were won by Winsdor, California pilot John Clarke, Steven Tiner, and D.J. Netto. Jason Solwold won the Trophy Dash to start on the pole for the feature.
