Tenney, Brookshire, Martinez, Watts, And Zimmerly Capture SSP Armed Forces Night Victories

Banks, Oregon- Sunset Speedway Park would host Armed Forces Night on Saturday, May 20th. The evening would attract an impressive car count with five classes in competition. Divisions on hand were the Budweiser IMCA Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Dwarf Cars, 4-Bees, and the New Bees.
Clark Tenney took care of business in the Budweiser IMCA Modifieds. Tenney would pace the field the entire distance to win the feature. Vancouver, Washington’s Kenny Miller finished second followed by Portland driver Aaron Elwess, in third. Fourth place went to John Campos, of Keizer, while Albany’s Craig Cassell was fifth.
In the Pure Stock division Yamhill driver Terry Houck would be the early race leader. Houck would lose the position to Kendall Lee, of Forest Grove. Larry Brookshire would get past Lee, just after lap ten, and would set sail afterwards to win his first race of the 2017 season. Kendall Lee was second while Forest Grove’s Amanda Clarke got third. Terry Houck and Rob Ferree, from Vancouver, Washington, were fourth and fifth respectively.
It would be a full on invasion of Dwarf Cars as both the Northwest Dwarfs and Pacific Hardtop Racing Association would be in attendance. St. Helens youngster Jake Tupper managed to lead the charge early in the main event. But just before the halfway mark Ryan Martinez would overtake him. The Portland ace, of Martinez, would remain in the number one spot the rest of the way to pick up the big victory. Tupper was a respectable second followed by Tigard’s Shane Youngren in third. The rest of the top five Jake Van Ortwick, of Scappoose, and Andy Lemmons. Earlier in the evening Molalla veteran Henry Corbin II would win the B Main.
Corey Watts would pace the field the entire distance of the 4-Bee feature. The victory would make Watts the second different winner as many races in the class. Vancouver, Washington helmsman Captain Turnabout voyaged his vessel to second place result while Ryan Conroy crossed the wire in third. William Wolfe and Austin Henderson would make up the rest of the top five finishing order.
Last but not least were the New Bees. Made up of SSP’s youngest competitors it would be Travis Zimmerly, of Vancouver, Washington, triumphant at the drop of the checkered flag. Taylor Sayre, also from Vancouver, Washington, would get second over third finishing Kaylee Batalgia, out of Forest Grove. Thunder Jones completed the finishers in fourth.
Sunset Speedway Park will be back in action for two nights of racing during Memorial Day Weekend. The Banks Bullring will host the annual Spring Challenge and features the Budweiser IMCA Modifieds, Bridgeport Logistics Street Stocks, Northwest Dwarfs, as well as Open, Restricted, and 1200cc Micro Sprints. The Dwarfs will be a non-point affair both events due to being a last minute edition to the card.
Both races the Pit Gates open at 2:00 PM, Front Gates 4:00, Time Trials begin at 5:30, with Racing kicking off at 6:30. Tickets are $13.00 for Adults, Seniors/Military/Juniors (13-17) $10.00, Youths (6-12) $5.00, and Children (5 and Under) are FREE.
