On Saturday June 22nd Sunset Speedway Park was back at it on the race track. The Banks bullring had a full pit area of cars to entertain fans all evening long. The divisions on the card consisted of the Northwest Wingless Tour, Northwest Extreme Modifieds, Street Stocks, and 4-Bees.
Former Northwest Wingless Tour champ Theo McCarty was the early race leader in the Schram Brothers Excavating #6 looking for his first win of the year. The Hillsboro driver would be overtaken on lap seven by defending series champion Bill Winsley from Molalla. Winsley would build a huge lead and would go on to win his first feature of the season in his Wilson’s Napa Auto Parts/Molalla Auto Works #10W XXX.
Theo McCarty would be the runner-up when everything was all said and done while Sterling Kane of Albany was third in his Fuel Injection Enterprises/BC Motorsports #89 XXX. Chris Peterson of Hillsboro was fourth, driving Brad Rhodes’ Pro Tow #50 JEI, followed by Garret Johnson of Poulsbo, Washington in his #3G mount.
In the Northwest Extreme Modified division Rick Graham of Portland made another visit to victory lane. Graham would dominate the field to score his fifth win in six starts in his Perfection Automotive/Sweere Trucking #18X entry.
The #12X of Vancouver, Washington’s Pamela Graham was second with third place going to The Sign Shop/Advocare #00 of Brandon Penney from Portland. The Transaction Transmissions #04 of Banks’ native Joey Tardio ended his evening in fourth while Andrew Olsen from Forest Grove was fifth in his Scotty's Auto Body/Pacific Oak Dental #23 mount.
A large contingent of Street Stocks was on hand for Saturday’s action. Defending champion Craig Loomis was the car to beat for much of the race in his Buz’s Equipment Trailers/City Sprint Delivery/Liberty Welding #01 Camaro. On the final lap Loomis would get caught up with a lapped car giving the lead to Tony Catalano of Forest Grove. Catalano would lose the lead to Brian Roden from West Linn in the final set of turns. It was the second win of the year for Roden in the Club Sport Oregon #14 Camaro.
Tony Catalano was second in his #19 machine while third was Jeff Lovell of Canby in the #40. Hillsboro’s Earl Claypool was fourth in the #3 entry followed by Rod Lowe of Cornelius in the #02 mount in fifth.
Gary Metes of Vernonia in his #36 car would take the lead on lap twenty to win his first 4-Bee feature in his first start. He would take the lead from the #00 of Mike Mastrangelo from Banks.
Mike Mastrangelo was second and crossing the stripe in third was the #12 of Jason Blythe of Buxton. Chris Gaboury in the #5 of Vancouver, Washington was fourth and completing the top five in fifth was the #14 of John Oyler from Scappoose.
