Sunset Speedway Park Introduces Iron Man Enduro Series
By Ben Deatherage
Banks, Oregon- Fans at Sunset Speedway Park are going to enjoy themselves in 2013 as a newly developed classification will compete on Sunday afternoons five times this year. That classification is the Iron Man Enduro Series that will compete in races that will last three hundred laps and have stoppages only for dangerous situations. The series has gained a lot of interest from several parties and there should be a large field of competitors each race.
“Greg Walters brought up the idea of having an Enduro series,” commented Doug Lockwood who will be the Series Director for 2013, “I wasn’t involved with the old Portland Speedway Enurdos but I asked around and found quite a bit of interest by people that I talked to. From there I brought the idea to Jerry Schram and I got the green light to put this thing together.”
The format of each race will differ and never be identical except for the number of laps that will be run, three hundred. There will be no heat races or qualifying events the field will be lined up and let loose. Lockwood will make sure everyone will be on their toes the entire time.
“You never know what will happen we may race one hundred laps turning left and turn around and race the track backwards,” he would continue, “this thing isn’t really about being the fastest car. It’s about making the distance.”
The rules are based off of Portland Speedway’s Enduro series with some additions put in so more cars can be involved. Currently right now there is bonus money up for grabs if a Mini Van is the winner. For a list of all the rules they can be found at www.sunsetspeedwaypark.com or call Doug Lockwood at (971)-235-7974.
“Our main goal is for everybody to have fun and get involved. This is a very cheap way to get into racing and should be a blast for both spectators and participants.”
The Sunset Speedway Park is located just west of the Portland metro area in Banks on the Sunset Highway. The venue is located in a gorgeous small town setting with rolling hills in the background. From April until October you can get your racing fix at this facility which competes weekly primarily on Saturday nights. Regular classes in action include the NW Extreme Winged Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, 4-Bee’s, NW Extreme Modifieds, and the Womens division. The facility will see several appearances by the touring NW Extreme Late Model Series as well as the Northwest Wingless Tour and the WMRA/USAC Midgets.
